I would hope the RSS feed location won’t change; it looks like it should be easy to set up a redirect.
It would be great if you could keep comment preview around with WordPress; the default install doesn’t have it, as I recall, and it’s quite handy when you’re hand-coding up HTML as a sanity check.

This is good advice. But beyond that, it’s also useful to limit access to the wpadmin directory and to the login directory using .htaccess.
If most of you guys usually access the admin panel from known IP’s, you can set the .htaccess to permit access from a finite number of specific IP addresses. (As a single author blog, I limit to il.comcast.net. You could limit to 10 possible combinations. This does provide a bit of extra security, but it is a pain in the neck if you blog when on travel. I just modify .htacess when I travel. With some thought you can probably think of a useful .htaccess file.)

My I suggest either a shorter line or a larger type for the main body of the text? The lines are uncomfortably long for easy reading. Generally, a 60=character line is considered optimal for textual materials. Longer lines allow the eye to lose track and requires re-reading to find one’s place.

The “share/save” button is exceptionally annoying. Looks good. I like the cleaner layout. (And contra-John B above, I do like the layout to take advantage of the full length of the window. This allows me to use an appropriate level of zoom and window width to optimize the line length and text size. I generally find 60-character lines good on paper but too short on the screen.)
One big problem, and perhaps it’s temporary: The layout is completely broken on Safari Touch (iPhone/iPod Touch): No summaries and no navigation. If you are going to use an alternate “Mobile” layout, please provide a link that will allow us to use the standard layout.

Very good. For some time I have felt that the clunky interface here (particularly, the lack of simple next/previous links, and the weird “link to a particular post leads to the post’s location on the main page, except when it doesn’t” thing) belies your technical background.
Not sure why people are worried your old content will go away… that only happens because site owners don’t know what they’re doing. But that people are used to seeing it happen reflects poorly on the blogging “industry” in general (both owners and vendors).

I’m not sure if the pre-screening of comments is such a good idea. One of the good things of Volokh is that at times it allows for a pretty quick dialogue between a few people. The old comments section was more readable. The new avatar field is completely unnecessary (even distracting) IMO. September 28, 2009, 12:55 pm1. Overall, nice job doing a seamless move without losing any archival material.
2. The new design is certainly clean and attractive.
3. I concur with FormFollowsFunction’s request to remove the avatars on comments. They don’t add anything to the discussion, and since most people don’t use them, they are superfluous.
4. I concur with FormFollowsFunction’s request to make the comments section wider to fill more of the screen, as it was far easier to read the sometimes lengthy comments.
Cato The Elder says:
Exactly, the text needs to fill the entire screen again! I miss the old font, too. There should be no distractions from the lengthy tracts of words that are often posted here.

…test…
September 28, 2009, 3:21 pmPatHMV says:
I also preferred the old version, but here’s my take on the new.
I agree with many above on ditching the avatars. I don’t need to see cute pictures of kitties or what not. It distracts from the substance of the user’s comments, which is where the focus should be.
And if we have to have avatars, can it be set so that the comment text doesn’t wrap around them? It’s hard to read when some lines extend just to the left edge of the avatar, and then sometimes the comment is long enough that one or two lines extend under the bottom of the avatar. Maybe put the avatars over on the left? (Or better yet, ditch the avatars entirely!)
Also, I find the indent plus extra spacing between paragraphs in the main posts and the comments to be very annoying. Most typographical references I’ve read say to do one or the other. Either blocked on the left (no initial line index) with an empty line between paragraphs or an indented initial line with no empty line between paragraphs.
The older version seemed much more serious. This seems much more flighty and “bloggy.”
September 28, 2009, 3:34 pmAnatid says:
The stylesheet for the new site needs work. The font for the h2 and h3 is aggravating, and the heavy padding and extra line spacing make text much more difficult to read. I read through the new stylesheet (they do some weird stuff in there) and it should be really easy to fix – do they let you edit the stylesheet manually? (Yeah, the old site looked 90′s, but it was functional 90′s.)
And, as I just discovered by accident … the posting box works in such a way that, if you hit “refresh,” Firefox no longer preserves your half-written post. Annoying.

September 28, 2009, 5:08 pmSarah says:
I agree with everyone saying this one seems less serious and more difficult to read. And avatars in a non-social-networking setting are just silly. Host it wherever you want, but I think the old design was nicer.
And I miss getting emails of all the posts.
September 28, 2009, 5:24 pmTNeloms says:
Are the comments really going to be moderated for all posts?
September 28, 2009, 9:36 pmBruce Hayden says:
I was happier with the old blog, but can live with this one. I do like the open/close HTML capabilities. So far, they seem easier to use, and I have the tools built in to let me do it the old way, if I want to.
I don’t like the one character indent at the beginning of each line of comment. Either give us real indents (maybe 5 characters), or none at all, preferably the later. The reason to indent paragraphs is to identify where they start, and that is not necessary if there are blank lines between. But with only that single blank at the beginning of the line, you need the blank line, but with the blank line between paragraphs, the one blank indent looks weird.
The avatars, or whatever are horrid. Besides, how do you sign on to WordPress anyway? I have an account there, somewhere, but can’t figure out how to use it from either here or through the link to WordPress at the bottom of your blog.
I don’t miss the email or RSS feeds, since I never used them. Sure, I read some of the posts just for their content, esp. for guest bloggers. But what I have kept coming back for years now are the comment threads. And getting email from them just swamps my email, which is bad enough already.
But, in the end, I will adapt. The content is just too good here.

I just noticed another “bug” that needs to be fixed. I have two versions of this thread open. On one, the most recent post (excluding one of mine) is from Bruce Hayden at 9:47 p.m.
However on the other, the most recent post is Theobromophile at 4:07 p.m. This is true even though I have “refreshed” this page several times.
September 28, 2009, 11:05 pmDave N says:
Interesting, I just commented that I could not get past theopromophile’s 4:07 post on one open window even though I could read Bruce Hayden’s 9:47 post on another (I had two open windows to this thread) (hitting “refresh” didn’t help, either).
When I submitted that comment (in the window stopped at 4:07), it disappeared completely and the thread “caught up” to a comment I made at 10:58 p.m.
I figured I would report all of this so that these glitches might be noted and fixed.

Comments are one of the things I love at this blog. They have slowed to a trickle due to nearly all comments being moderated.
I hope you find a different approach to comment moderation. There are tons of plugins for wordpress. Many can be used in parallel. I recommend BadBehavior at the front end, and I use both spam karma. There is also a spamkarma extention for akismet.
If you use all 3 together, it really helps. (Other plugins work well too. But that combination doesn’t force everyone to use captcha for ever comment.)
Hmmm… this seems to be not moderated? I’ll come back and see.

For those who are trying to log into WP – as far as I can tell, this would bring you no advantages. At the moment the site is retrieving the WP avatar I created when I played around with a WP site years ago, solely on the basis of my name and email address.
Also, color me skeptical about the comment moderation – my posts seem to be appearing instantly (unless they’re just viewable to people with my IP address; I’m checking with different browsers.) We’ll see with this one; I’m posting it early on purpose.
September 29, 2009, 8:37 amlucia says:
Sarah–
Yesterday, my comments told me they were moderated and few comments appeared. However, I could see some comments were appearing quickly. September 29, 2009, 9:10 amIf you hate sans serif fonts, most browsers let you substitute. Firefox has a “preference” feature for that. Set that for your browser and authors can chose whatever they like best.

I have a problem with the signaling of links in the text. The color is not different enough from the text of the regular words. I am partly colorblind and have trouble seeking which words have links. I also note that the Leave a Reply section requires us to leave our name. But which name? I was not sure, and so at first I typed my real name. Fortunately, I hit the preview button and thus was able to switch to my screen name.

I am confused about how to edit correctly. In my 9.49 a.m post, I mistakenly wrote “previous” instead of “preview” in the last line, despite having previewed the comment. So I sought to change the word. When I hit the edit button, The screen went dark except for the box in which to do the editing. But it gave me only two choices: “save” and “cancel.” I hit “save” and waited while a sort-of clock ran down. Then the box disappeared, and the unedited version of the comment appeared again. So how does one edit to get rid of a mistake?
You cannot assume, at least correctly, that all of us are so technologically proficient that we understand instinctively what to do.

Lucia, thanks so much for the tip about Firefox font preferences. I changed to my favorite New Times Roman and am as happy as a clam.
The one character indent is a bit off-putting because I think I caused it and try to “fix” it.
Any tricks about removing it?

I would recommend that comments be numbered to make it easier to refer back to them.

FYI, the blogroll is broken – it might be time to revisit that anyway.

It would be really helpful if, when we open a particular blog, we are sent to the first previously unread comment instead of having to scroll through to try to find where we left off.

It looks like the bugs are slowly being ironed out. I agree about numbering the comments, just because it is easier to reference them.

I figured out how to set the avatar, or “gravatar” as it is called in the wordpress.com universe. You have to open a wordpress account (I have four blogs with them), select Profile, and upload an image. But it can’t be a very large image, and you have to crop it to square.

I would expect the fast posting is the result of whitelisting the email addresses of regular posters, and only moderating new ones. Just a guess, but plausible. Since I got one email announcing a post, apparently the email addresses of regular commenters are in the database.

I was wondering if our gracious hosts might open another thread to allow us to comment on the blog conversion, so as the discontent may not pollute ongoing conversation? I am finding that all the blank white space makes the blog difficult to read, and worse, difficult to formulate comments within…

Sorry, I don’t know how to deal with the 1 character indent. I assume that’s something in the CSS file, so the blog designer will have to deal with that.
I wonder if this will be moderated. . .

Without a commenter login it appears possible for someone to spoof the identities of other commenters, posting objectionable material under someone else’s name. WordPress uses cookies to identify me when I use this computer, but we really need password protection.

These are some very important points, some of which I have never even considered. I can’t wait to review my own website using these points. Thanks for the advise.
