I played both rugby and “sissy-rugby” American Football at to the university level which whoever wrote this obviously didn’t. In American Football the collisions are of much greater impact, a rugby tackle is more like a wrestling move, grabbing both legs and hanging on, which is actually a more effecient way to tackle but not nearly as violent as an American Football hit in which you project your entire body through your opponent, head, elbows, knees, shoulders.

I agree with this, though I think a good part of the problem can be attributed to the steroid and amphetamine use — the collisions are much more violent.

Careless: Rugby fact: it’s not legal to tackle like they do in football. Apparently they’re afraid of ruptured spleens or something. But I’m sure all the rugby players are clean.And you don’t even have the excuse of being European, making that comment.

The picture of Bush giving the satisfying and illegal left hook comes to mind. ;-D

Mark Field: Is “European” supposed to be an insult? Is that like “gay”?

Touchy? No, it's because it's always Europeans who are grossly ignorant of American football who make these comments. Americans tend to be aware of things like the horrible health effects football has on the athletes who play it and are quite aware that they're more suicidally masculine than wimpy.

Personally, I prefer soccer, rugby, or Australian Rules football to American football. American football is basically a team gladitorial competition. The best part is the lack of timeouts and commercial interruptions during matches.

I read that Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated went to Honduras early to cover the pre-match atmosphere and got robbed at gunpoint on Friday. The Honduran interim president, Micheletti, telephoned him to apologize.

Hearty congratulations on the U.S.A.'s sixth straight World Cup qualification (including 1994's automatic qualification as host nation). What a difference from the old days, when the U.S.A. hardly ever qualified (1930 and 1950 excepted). It is a tremendous achievement. My first international match was the U.S.A.'s 8-1 loss to England in 1959 at the old Wrigley Field baseball park in Los Angeles, later the home of the Los Angeles Angeles when they first joined the American League). For you real football fans, here is the way the Los Angeles Times covered that 50-year-old match. The U.S.A. would never get that kind of one-sided drubbing today.
