As a resident of Massachusetts, I am sorry I missed this news item and the commemoration event. I happened to be in Israel in October, observing with great interest how a mass immigration from Russia affected the country. The Samoletchik affair was one of the crucial events that prompted the subsequent gradual opening of emigration, which in turn played a role in the eventual fall of the Soviet system. As for the impact on the west, this blog is also one of the results of that opening, as the fate of several co-bloggers was defined by it. Need I say more?!
