An amusing story from Claire Berlinski (among other things, the author of a recent book on Margaret Thatcher).

Thanks to InstaPundit for the pointer.

Congratulations. Volokh Conspiracy is now the #2 hit if you Google “Penthouse Letters” and sort by date…

Most everyone with any historical literacy (alas a shrinking fraction of population) has heard of the Punic Wars– a collection of wars between Rome and Carthage 264-146 BC. But how many have heard about the Pubic Wars? The escalating rivalry between Penthouse Magazine and Playboy Magazine where each magazine would try to one-up the other without crossing some imagined “line of decency.” A real arms race, well not really arms..

    3. Michael says:

The Penthouse association has 2 degrees of appropriateness.

      Fedor Emelianenko

Perhaps the most amusing part of the story is the idea that anyone would consider Emin Boztepe the deadliest man in the world. The man had a notorious feud with the Gracies in the 1990s in which he denounced brazilian jiu-jitsu and the UFC as fake and touted the superiority of wing-tsun. He set up various score-settling matches with the Gracies surrounded by much hoop-la only to back out of every single one of them. He is known as one of the biggest frauds in the martial arts world.

At last, competition for Ann Coulter in the conservative babes department.

    7. Joe says:

Looking at the pic at her site, comparing her to Ann is an insult to Claire.

    8. Sakeneko says:

I’m not exactly qualified to comment on any woman’s “babe quality” (I’m female and straight), but comparing Claire’s *writing* to that Coulter is a completely gratuitous insult to her. That article was delightful. I’m going to buy a couple of her books and fully expect them to be good. ;-)

Kind of off-topic, but kind of not. As many of you know Carrie Prejean has been hitting the talk show circuit to not-talk about the reason why her breach of contract lawsuit against the Miss California Pageant was hastily settled by her side due to an “opsie” in her past. She got all flustered because she went on Larry King and he tried to ask her about it.

Someone please clarify. If you’re suing someone for breach of contract, and it turns out you were the one who breached the contract for making a nude video, wouldn’t the settlement stipulate that the other side can’t talk about the embarrassing vid, not you? Isn’t it assumed that you wouldn’t talk about it because it makes you look bad?

Why would you put language in a settlement that restricts you from talking about something you don’t want to talk about anyway.
