Sunday Song Lyric

Glenn Beck likes Muse.  He’ s hardly alone, given the award-winning British Altrock band’s growing popularity in the U.S.  While most other Muse fans may be drawn in by the music, Beck likes the lyrics.  “These guys are brilliant, they know the time that we live in,” he said during a September broadcast. “All of the lyrics are… dead on, on what’s coming our way.”   After Beck praised the band and read their lyrics on his radio show, a Muse representative contacted the program seeking a retraction — or so Beck said.  The Telegraph reports it was all a joke.  In any event, looking at the lyrics from the band’s hit single, “Uprising,” it’s easy to see what Beck likes.

The paranoia is in bloom,
The PR transmissions will resume,
They’ll try to push drugs to keep us all dumbed down,
And hope that we will never see the truth around,
So come on!

Another promise, another seed,
Another packaged lie to keep us trapped in greed,
With all the green belts wrapped around our minds,
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined,
So come on!

They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
And we will be victorious!
So come on!

Here are the full lyrics, the video, and a live performance. [UPDATE: That live clip is no longer available on youTube, so here are two more: 1, 2.]  And here are the lyrics to “United States of Eurasia,” another tune that apparently caught Beck’s fancy.

I dont read the blog for a few days and the writers are now worshiping Glen Beck. Sigh. I hope this is ignorance and not stupidity.

[RESPONSE:"worshipping Glenn Beck"?!? Where, precisely, is the Beck worship? I've often used references to music by public figures as an excuse for posting a particular lyric. How is noting the fact of his on-air discussion of a popular band -- a discussion that received substantial coverage on music and pop culture blogs -- equivalent to "worship"? I don’t say anything positive or negative about him in the post. I think you need dial down your sensitivity. -- JHA]

What Beck likes is his politics coming back into power, exactly what Democrats liked a few years back when they started towards gaining their majorities and the Presidency.

That it always play out like the movie “Network”…..blame the media.

JHA: Maybe steve is listening to his tooth fillings.

“Worshiping Beck” is defined as not dismissing him with epithets and insults.

Perhaps someday we’ll have occasion to review The Who’s “We Won’t Get Fooled Again”.

Watching Beck is like reading left wing blogs used to be in the Bush days… “paranoia strikes deep”

Though I may find Beck distasteful, and wish people would just ignore him, I clearly misread the post. I therefore apologize.

I don’t regularly listen to Beck, but I used to listen to Limbaugh on a daily basis for a couple of years and Beck strikes me as variation on the theme. If that’s true, he’s probably wont to rail at celebrities speaking their minds on political issues complaining that their celebrity status gives them no insight deserving of the platform that being a celebrity gives them.

While I completely disagree with that assertion (for example much of U2′s music has been political since their first album, clearly they’ve thought about the issues at serious length in order to write songs about them), if Beck states that *these* musicians are “brilliant, they know the time that we live in,” and are worthy of having their lyrics recited on his show (despite them being nothing more than what many punk rockers were singing in the 70s) then it would be hypocritical for Beck to ever claim that any celebrity is abusing their fame by using it to promote their politics.
