We Now Have a Twitter Feed

It’s VolokhConspirac. I know next to nothing about Twitter, so I might well have not configured this optimally; if so, let me know. Also, I couldn’t set up a twitter feed called VolokhConspiracy, because that was 16 letters long — but perhaps that’s just the user name length limit, and I can somehow set up a longer feed name. Just let me know, please, what suggestions you might have.

UPDATE: Readers suggested a shorter feed name, so we’re also at VolokhC; but I’ve kept VolokhConspirac for the benefit of those who have already subscribed to it.

Go for a shorter name — Volokh, VolokhBlog, VCblog, etc. The longer your blog name is, the less room there is to retweet your posts.

Yes. You would absolutely benefit from a shorter handle.

I think I twittered once. It was in a Three Stooges movie when I was in Jr. High School.

I will second the calls for shortening the name. I like Adam’s suggestion of @VCBlog.

Facebook has more than 15 times as many users as twitter. And, the status update function on facebook functions essentially the same, only reaching many more users. As well, everyone on twitter is also on facebook, but the reverse is not true.

I would recommend setting up a Volokh Conspiracy Page on facebook using the Pages feature. You can then enter the updates that same as you would on twitter, but they will reach a great many more people.

You don’t need to set up a new account to change your name. Since most of your followers are using the account with the longer name, I’d suggest shutting down the account with the short name, then changing the name of the account with the long name. You won’t lose followers that way unless they’re not actually following you, but instead have bookmarked your old URL.

You definitely want the shortest name possible. Don’t forget that the whole purpose of your Twitterfeed is to post your link and make your title interesting enough that people will click on it. Also, you want or hope for retweets so your post is seen by the greatest number of eyes and if your name takes up so many characters, there won’t be space to retweet. I would recommend Volokh and nothing more. Do a custom avatar with the full Volokh Conspiracy on it instead.

I’d vote for VOLOCON myself – if there were a vote. Sounds like a convention for a bunch of nerdy law professors and lawyers. It might even be an accurate description of the blog. . . Of course, VConspiracy wouldn’t be bad either but then you’d probably getting a lot of people subscribing to it thinking it was some kind of viral marketing campaign for the new ‘V’ television series.

On a related note: I might be the only nerd out there interested in this, but any chance of a version of the VC for mobile devices like Blackberries (“m.volokh.com”)? I know nothing about how much that would cost you guys, so it could be prohibitively expensive.

I only ask because since you switched to the new blog-hosting service, it’s almost impossible to read the regular VC on my blackberry. Before, I could zoom in once and it would fit perfectly to my screen. Now, it’s too small without zooming in, but if I zoom in once it makes each post twice the size of my screen, which makes reading impossible.

Maybe there’s a way I can change my BB settings to correct for this, but I’m too lazy to try to figure it out.

      Thoughts?

At the very least, you should upper-case the final letter in the long name: “VolokhConspiraC”.

      Conspira-cee, get it?

    19. Joe Tetreault says:

      Prof,
If I’m not mistaken you could have changed the name to the shorter version. Since you’re currently only feeding blog posts via twitterfeed (unless I missed a tweet to the contrary) it functions as a de facto RSS feed. (to Achilles – the RSS feed for the blog is: http://volokh.com/feed/)

If you want to consolidate the two accounts, you can send messages to your followers, either directly or a broadcast via twitter that you’re planning to consolidate to one account. Being somewhat of a twitter n00bie, I cannot speak to its purpose or efficacy. But it may yet develop into a useful channel of message dissemination.
