Such Nice Readers We Have

I noticed that some other blogs prominently post favorable reviews of the blog (much like blurbs on a book jacket), so I thought I’d post a few kind words from our readers:

I also appreciate your blog and to thank you I would like to offer you cheap knock-off sneakers at a deeply discounted rate.

Is this some version of the Turing Test? I wonder if it’s possible to consistently determine which of such comments were left: 1) by a computer system stocked with such phrases (with perhaps some variables), pre-written by a native English speaker, 2) by a computer system stocked with such phrases, pre-written by a native of Asia, or 3) by someone in Asia making $.20 to $.50 per hour to surf the net and type in such things live.

    3. PatHMV says:

Oh, and I’m kind of curious to know what’s at mature.com… but not nearly enough to actually click on it, and certainly not from work! Scared what I might find.

    4. Daniel Charlies says:

      Drink it in, baby!

    5. Sara says:

      “thirstily look forward”

      Such, blindingly good taste!

    6. Dave N. says:

Hey, that’s nothing. I regularly get e-mails from people telling me that, out of the blue, I have won $10,000,000 in lotteries I do not remember entering but that to collect my prize I must send a $500 processing fee first.

Between those and my Nigerian inheritances that I am waiting on, I figure I am set for life.

I’d also worry about what I might catch.

    8. arch1 says:

Any theory about how comments such as this originate has to account for the relationship between Aamos’s and mature com’s comments. Which one is the precursor? Are there missing links? Etc.:-)

    9. BT says:

What no penis enlargement offers? Man, unlike DaveN, that is all I get. I do wonder who keeps telling them?

    10. PatHMV says:

arch, they’re using the same program is all, I think.

I read an article once about glitches with software that posted automated “WFM” ads in the Craigslist personals (companies try to sucker guys into signing up for some paid service to webcam with the woman who supposedly posted the ad). Anyway, some of the ads would get placed despite program glitches, which led to the variable name being posted, rather than the actual variable itself. So the ad would read: “Hi! I’m a [$FemAdjective1] girl looking for a really [$MaleAdjective1] like you to really [$Female2] me!”

    11. PatHMV says:

BT… perhaps they are missing because the spammers know what a big swinging [penis] the VC is in the blogosphere; it would just be a waste of time to send those kinds of ads this way. ;-)

      Probably Cheap Air Jordan Shoes…..

    13. Chris Travers says:

Also I would add my voice here and say “thanks and keep up the good work.”

There is a reason why those of us who are here keep coming back. The combination of (with a few exceptions) very high quality content and (with a few exceptions) intelligent and thoughtful commenters from across the political spectrum means I always have something interesting to think about every day.

    14. JK says:

I feel a bit out of it, what’s the up side for these spammers? That you click on the link to their site? That seems pretty thin.

    15. theobromophile says:

Why does mature.com make “grab your rss feed” sound like a euphemism for something?

Could it also have something to do with the lack of intimate region enhancement offers?

    16. Gallileo says:

      JK,

The advantage is googly. The links from the comments of a highly-rated blog to their commerce site will bump them up in the rankings. They don’t care a bit about any of us clicking on their links.

    17. Vader says:

I have to admit that the thought of an anonymous stranger on the Internet being eager to grab my rss is disquieting.

    18. BZ says:

I did want to comment only on the “Marmot girls” one:

it’s my understanding that marmots (a form of groundhog) hibernate five months out of the year.

    20. JK says:

Thanks Gallileo, now it makes some sense. No wonder I’ve found Google to be become less effective over time. I’ve heard there’s a lot of gaming of the google system, but I don’t really know much about the mechanics of it.

    21. Mark N. says:

Gallileo: JK, The advantage is googly. The links from the comments of a highly-rated blog to their commerce site will bump them up in the rankings. They don’t care a bit about any of us clicking on their links.G

That’s no doubt the motivation, but I believe it no longer works. Most blogs, including VC, now put a “rel=nofollow” tag on the links back to posters’ websites, which tells search engines not to follow or count the links for indexing purposes. (More on that at Wikipedia.)

      Vader wins the thread!

I get those, plus ‘increase your sperm’ ones. I forward them to my husband.

Marmot is also a brand of high quality hiking/backpacking expedition gear.

Perhaps the name speaks more to there activity rather than inactivity

i agree wholeheartedly with you on this matter. if only more people would as well..
