“Divine Gift for Editing”

OK, the actual story (in the Columbus Dispatch) contains some pretty serious allegations about religious discrimination against government employees. But I did like this passage:

One worker also complained that [Virginia McInerney, director of the Ohio Workers' Compensation Council,] said the source of conflict in the office was an “inability to recognize her ‘divine gift for editing.’”

A highly underappreciated sort of divine gift, I think, and one that I wish more people were divinely given.

I blame the government for not recognizing this divine gift more.

In today’s USA Today, comparing salaries of government vs non-government jobs, “editors” was one of the few where the government paid less: government editors “$42,210″ vs. private editors “$54,803.”

House Minority Leader William Batchelder, R-Medina and the council chairman when McInerney was hired, said she called him a few days ago to let him know that she had to fire three people.

William Batchelder is the husband of Alice Batchelder, chief judge of the 6th circuit. Completely irrelevant, but just interesting to note in light of the 10th circuit nomination (another example is Rendell of the 3rd is the wife of the gov of penn).

If the facts are as alleged (and I grant that this is a big if), the case is such an obvious Title VII violation that resisting the claims ought to be subject to sanctions.

According to this authority, the patron saints of editors are John Bosco and John the Apostle (not the Baptist).

Not Catholic myself, but I am enthused with the same spirit.

On at least some accounts, the canonical version of the Old and New Testaments was compiled and redacted by scribes guided by the Holy Ghost, ensuring that they would not include any texts that were not the Word of God, or misreport what God had said in them. That is, there is a case to be made that divine gifts for editing are basic to the Christian faith—and, by the same argument, to the other Faiths of the Book.

John the Apostle? Is that the same John who ate the book in Revelations?

Many are given the lesser gift of editing, but are few are granted by the divine the far more important gift of being able to edit one’s own work.
