I wouldn’t normally post about job openings, but I’ve seen two particularly cool openings recently for those interested in electronic privacy law: First, the national office of the ACLU has announced that they’re hiring for a new position of Director of the ACLU’s Project on Speech, Privacy, and Technology, based in New York. Second, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is looking for a deferred law firm associate (or some other young lawyer willing to volunteer) to do FOIA work out of its San Francisco office — see second item here.

Job openings? Is this another April Fools Joke?

For the love of god, please do! Hell, make a weekly job-openings open thread! It’s a disaster zone out here for 3Ls without jobs.

Wow. The job market is so crazy that Volokh.com is posting a job opening for a position that I already saw, applied for and most likely will not get. :(
Oh, this is in regards to the EFF position.

Is the ACLU slot in their new ‘free lawyers for all Muslims’ program ?

Hmm, I guess even had I set the over-under line at five for a “how many posts before an entirely gratuitous, ridiculously over-the-top and false slam on the ACLU comment shows up” bet, the under still would have won.
April 1, 2010, 7:28 pmPeteP says:
Joseph – if you’re referring to my post above, I included an easy link to prove the truth of the matter. If you have a problem with that, then, well …… ask the judge to prohibit it from being entered into evidence. You can not debate the truth of it, so maybe you can claim it’s prejudicial or something.
But it remains true. I did not invent it, the ACLU did.
April 1, 2010, 9:38 pmStrict says:
PeteP:”Is the ACLU slot in their new ‘free lawyers for all Muslims’ program ?”
Lol. ACLU is not providing free lawyers for all Muslims for all matters.
Rather, a local ACLU chapter has offered to provide certain legal services for Muslims in Eastern Missouri who are interrogated by the FBI, for the matter of that interrogation.
Of course, the way you spin it is a good way to get all worked up and mad about how hard it is to be a white Christian man in America these days under the thumb of Communist in Chief Hussein.
April 1, 2010, 9:50 pmPeteP says:
Strict – the ACLU is engaging in overt religious discrimination, no matter how you slice it. No Christians allowed, no Jews allowed, no atheists allowed. Muslims, specifically and only Muslims.
You try to paint that any way you please.
BTW, I never said ‘for all matters’. However, the ACLU says it IS ‘all Muslims’. I didn’t write their policy, they did.
Nice try putting words in my mouth. Epic fail.
April 1, 2010, 10:02 pmStrict says:
And PeteP, the ACLU doesn’t “favor” Muslims, like you imply.
Here.
2010: ACLU chapters of PR, NH, ME, MA, and RI filed amicus brief in support of Jehovah’s Witnesses’ right to practice in PR.
2009: ACLU of MD represented a Christian ministry in Elkton.
2009: ACLU and ACLU of Nation’s Capital represented a Quaker who wanted an exemption from draft registration.
2009: ACLU and ACLU of NJ won a lawsuit on behalf of an imprisoned Pentacostal minister to protect his right to preach in prison.
2009: ACLU of FL filed a lawsuit for Dove World Outreach Center, in defense of wearing an “Islam is the devil” t-shirt in a public school.
2009: ACLU of MI filed an amicus brief in support of a First Baptist Church which faced zoning problems.
2009: ACLU of TN defended a church group which wanted to conduct services in a public park.
2009: ACLU and ACLU of VA got a jail to changes it policies to allow Christian materials in incoming mail.
ON AND ON.
Libertarians should love the ACLU. It baffles me when supposedly “freedom loving” right wingers hate the ACLU so much.
April 1, 2010, 10:03 pmStrict says:
PeteP, the ACLU provides free lawyers for Muslims who are interrogated by the FBI. That is not all Muslims. The ACLU never said they would provide free lawyers for all Muslims. You can repeat the lie as much as you want, but that won’t make it true.
“No Christians allowed, no Jews allowed, no atheists allowed.”
I don’t follow. No Christians allowed into ACLU membership? Allowed where? What the heck are you talking about?
April 1, 2010, 10:07 pmPeteP says:
Strict – nice try changing the subject and coming up with some kind of lame historical attempt at a diversion.
However – the truth of what I posted remains, and obviously you can not debate it, or you would do so.
And try not to play dumb, BTW. You read the link as easily as I did. The policy is ” … for Muslims…”. Specifically. Thus, it excludes every other religion.
Had they announced an identical policy featuring ‘special free legal help for Christians ( which, BTW, I am not )’, or ‘special free legal help for white people’, the uproar would be unimaginable.
Try as you might to deny what the ACLU said, change the subject as you will, you simply can not hide the truth of what they said. Period.

April 1, 2010, 10:32 pmStrict says:
PeteP, this is my last post on the issue, and I’ll repeat: you said the ACLU had a “free lawyers for all Muslims” program. Those are your exact words. They don’t. You [intentionally] mischaracterize its program.
It has a “free lawyers for all Muslims in Eastern Missouri who are interrogated by the FBI” program.

April 1, 2010, 10:46 pmA. Zarkov says:
Does the ACLU offer fee legal services for all Jews interrogated by the FBI? I know of one (non-Muslim) scientist who was and is interrogated by the FBI. The FBI even sent agents to interrogate people who know him. As far as I know, none would qualify for free ACLU services. Too bad he’s not a Muslim, he could save a lot of money.
Suppose I start my own legal clinic and offer free legal services to white men who are victims of reverse discrimination. Like firemen for example. Would you be ok with that? Would the press condemn me? Can you seriously deny that there would be a fuss or something worse, like death threats against me?

I believe that if the government were rounding up large numbers of Jews for questioning, the ACLU would be among the first organizations to offer support, yes. Oh, that wasn’t your question?
