The Volokh Conspiracy

Book Recommendation:

Just finished reading John Scalzi's The Ghost Brigades, and liked it very much. It's a sequel to his Old Man's War, which I also very much liked. It's fresh, thoughtful, and readable; highly recommended.

Nobody Special:
Is John Scalzi the best new "classic" SF writer to come along in a long time? I think so.

I haven't gotten to Ghost Brigades yet, but I also enjoyed Old Man's War. I thought it had some interesting and novel concepts- heh, novel- and reminded me a great deal of all the Heinlein stuff I read in high school. However, I thought the characters could have been developed a bit more fully, and the work was just too dang short, although I suppose this makes for a good sequel. Scalzi has a noticeable talent for clarity of writing which makes reading the book a breeze, and I'd have to agree with the Volokhian endorsement.

Last two sci-fi series I enjoyed were Card's Ender's Quartet and Vernor Vinge's Peace War books.

I'll have to give Scalzi a try.

Hmm well I could try it but I hope the writing is good cause the story line seems boring. I have read more Sci Fi than anyone I have ever met so(claiming expertise by volume?) I can recommend a good book or two.

Try Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan for something "new". The Envoy stuff is just cool.

Alastair Reynolds too.
