Gun Control in French-speaking Africa. Le contrôle des armes en Afrique francophone

A new report from the Independence Institute reports on gun control developments in Rwanda, Burundi, Ivory Coast, D.R. Congo, and ECOWAS in the last several weeks. The report is in both English and French. En francais et anglais.

They were forced to disarm at the insistence of the World Bank? So if they don't disarm, I guess they won't get any type of financing? HA. Let's see...

Disarm, and get $$$... perhaps die, but at least we have $$$.

Don't disarm = no money.... But you'll be able to defend yourself and your family because the government is obviously not doing a good job of protection.

Why does that seem like such a lose/lose situation?

On June 9, the [Rwandan] government set ablaze 1,500 small arms to demonstrate the commitment to eliminate small arms.

I could be wrong, but somehow I suspect that these weren't the government's guns being burned....

"Disarmament" in West Africa occurs when the rebels chop your arms off with a machete.

But, good thing they didn't have AK-47s.

Someone should have at least air dropped in some guns and ammo during the genocide. Instead the great UN peacekeepers and all the rest of the world allowed a massacre. Shame, Shame. AT least give them the ability to protect themselves.. To not do so is immoral.

The UN is attempting to do to the USA what they have done / are doing to the rest of the "civilized" (UN speak for "disarmed") world.

Ah but they lost big in Brazil where they sunk alot of money and even had that great man of PEACE Mandela run ads. They lost the Nation wide referendun by 60+%. that really shocked the people who want to disarem the innocent and leave them to the violent elements in the society and government.

I can't believe how many counter-insurgency efforts have neglected this simple and effective tool: all you need to do is have the UN issue the insurgents an ultimatum to disarm. That's all! We need to get this William Swing guy over to Iraq right now, so he can tell the bad guys there just what he told them in the Congo: "I have come to give a clear message - it's finished - now it is time for peace."

Jeeks is corrrect. Taking away firearms is the same everywhere. The very people who need protection get disarmed. The bad guys will find a way to get weapons. And yes, a machete is a weapon.

In "civilized" countries disarming the population results in an inreasing number of violent crimes agianst the population.

In not so "civilized countries" it results in mass murder and the intimidation of those remaining. Of course international law is always available to those left alive after the guilty are brought down (sometimes).
