2006 Firearms Law and Second Amendment Symposium

Held at George Mason Law School on October 7, and now available on the web, for your viewing pleasure. The main page of the symposium offers links of hi-fi and lo-fi versions of all the presentations, in Windows Media and Quicktime. My presentation covered the international law basis of the human right to self-defense.

The organizers of the symposium worked earnestly to include a good mix of speakers from the gun control side, but, unfortunately, they refused to attend, even with all expenses paid. In contrast, Saul Cornell of Ohio State appeared at the 2005 symposium, and made a very good presentation.

I guess the gun grabbers cut and run this time.

Just wanted to make Dave feel at home....

Notwithstanding the large number of pro-gun Democrats lected and anti-gun Republicans rejected in the last election, isn't the fact that the Democrat's leadership will now be highly anti-gun troubling? Schumer has said he will "veto" the next ("machine-gun") Alito, Pelosi is a known gun hater, and even the rejetion of Murtha as majority leader is bad for 2d amend. rights as far as the new congressional leadership goes. Any survey about the actual prospects for this Congress, besides the raw numbers?

You would think the Democrats wouldn't be stupid enough to pick that fight when they don't have to.

You would think. But one should never underestimate the stupidity of politicians.

His A+ grading from the NRA considered, Murtha is best shunted to the side. Even an NRA Lifer like me would prefer his impact on the country's common good be minimal.

He smells of the hack, we know he's a slanderer of our people in uniform.

I'm certainly no fan of Murtha's; I was commenting only on the level of support for the 2d amend. in the current Congress. Conversely, though many of the new Democrats in Congress are pro-gun, I'm not very excited about the takeover for other reasons either(most prominently, the likely effects on nat'l security, and immigration and economic policy).
