"Able Danger" Put to Bed:

The Senate Intelligence Committee's investigation concluded that the "Able Danger" allegations that military anlysts identified the 9-11 hijackers before September 11, the LA Times reports.

"Able Danger did not identify Mohammed Atta or any other 9/11 hijacker at any time prior to Sept. 11, 2001," the committee determined, according to an eight-page letter sent last week to panel members by the top Republican and Democrat on the committee.

The Able Danger allegations were championed by Represenative Curt Weldon (R-PA), who lost his bid for reelection in November.

It turns out that there was more than one guy named "Mohammed" working for Al Queda. You might have though that even Crazy Curt Weldon could have imagined that, but you'd be wrong if you did.

...Nor was the alleged chart or any information developed by Able Danger improperly destroyed at the direction of Pentagon lawyers, the panel concluded — a charge that had stoked claims of a cover-up....

I wonder how you would know something like that if someone was determined to prevent you from knowing. I guess you report what you were told in a situation like that.

Mr. Kalb did a good job of prodding Hamilton and Keane on why they seemed to go easy on some issues and witnesses. Both claimed that "access" and the need for "unanimity" in the recommendations required they pull their punches a bit. Nothing serious, both claimed. Mr. Hamilton has an interesting history going back to the Iran-Contra investigation, he's on record at the time as being concerned about the Reagan administration being close to toppling. Was that really his concern as an investigator, or was it to follow the facts?

Anyway, will be nice if the new Congress finally gets around to doing its job and completing that long-promised and long-delayed Intelligence Committee report on pre-war uses and abuses of intelligence. Seems to be remarkable amount of push-back there on actually getting anything done. Hopefully that report won't be so concerned about offending sensibilities and the political fate of the players. Just encourages suspicions, that kind of thing.

Steve:
I wonder why people even bother to post obvious plagiarism as blog comments. It's not like someone's keeping score.

I would enjoy seeing the document from which the LA Times is selectively quoting and then compare the conclusions there with the declassified statements and testimony of the Able Danger officers.

I smell a politically motivated finesse job here. It would pay to carefully parse each and every conclusion in this report.
