The Volokh Conspiracy

Congratulations to Judge Douglas Ginsburg

(former boss of Conspirator Erik Jaffe) on his engagement!

Congratulations also to Judge David Sentelle (former boss of Conspirator Jonathan Adler) for having been recognized, contrary to original reports, as not a bigamist. Thanks to How Appealing for the pointer.

UPDATE: D'oh! I originally called Judge Ginsburg "David," a silly slip — a colleague of mine is named David Ginsburg, and though the two of them look not much more alike than Judges Ginsburg and Sentelle, some neurons somehow got crossed in my head. Embarrassing; thanks to a reader for correcting me on this.

CJColucci:
Maybe Judge Sentelle and Congressman John Conyers can have a few laughs over a few drinks. I doubt anyone would confuse the two of them.

Folks, this is a happy occasion, on which Judge Ginsburg merits congratulation or, at most, silence. I've deleted a few comments that struck me as not in keeping with the suitable tone. Usually, such comments would be just fine; they're not particularly rude, and I generally have no sacred cows here. But the man is getting engaged; let's just be nice this once.

I was just going to add--given his distinguished career, it is sad that it is not Justice Douglas Ginsburg with this happy news.

Eugene,

You are obviously part of the superstition problem. I resent your deleting my posts on your whim. I said nothing defamatory and used none of George Carlin's favorite words. You deleted my posts out of your religious narrow-mindedness.

Prof. Volokh: My comment WAS nice. I have nothing but happy thoughts for the distinguished jurist. Your trigger was a bit hairy in this instance.

I take it the deleted comments made some reference to the reason Judge Ginsburg's nomination to the Supreme Court was withdrawn?

Be that as it may, congratulations are certainly in order.

Congrats to Chief Judge Ginsburg, who is a class act.

And at the risk of getting this post deleted, I will agree it is a darn shame it is not Justice Ginsburg. I often think how incredibly unlucky he got--I strongly suspect that had he been nominated under almost any other circumstances, a bit sooner or a bit later, he would have sailed through.

Maybe my memory of the D. Ginsburg, as opposed to R.B. Ginsburg, nomination is flawed, but as I recall it, the President bailed soon after embarrassing but not very damning revelations of casual marijuana use surfaced. I don't recall any noisy demand from the opposing party that the nomination be withdrawn or credible predictions that a confirmation vote would be doomed. Did I miss something?

CJColucci,

I believe the reports came out in the press, and just a few days later Ginsburg withdrew his name (I assume after discussing it with the Reagan Administration, but I don't know for sure). I don't recall, however, who might have said what in those few days.

After a little research, it appears that Bill Bennett, then Secretary of Education, was sent to Ginsburg after the public revelations and Bennett asked him to withdraw.
