Some Good News Out of the Palestinian Territories:

The imminent formation of a liberal new party not tied to Hamas or Fatah, with many prominent supporters:

"This movement would be based on liberal ideas and advancing democracy and human rights in the PA," said Zakut. "The idea is to have a pragmatic movement that would support the idea of two states on the basis of the 1967 borders and PLO platform, while resolving the refugee problem in an agreed-upon manner based on the resolutions of the United Nations and Arab League."

Is Hanan Ashrawi one of the organizers of this "liberal new party"? (BTW, does it have a name?) She used to be the official or quasi-official Palestinian spokesperson, or at least the media treated her as such. Not as laughably mendacious in that capacity as Saddam's Baghdad Bob in his day, but an "apologist" for all things Palestinian, so IMO she is not some great ray of hope.

Does "resolving the refugee problem in an agreed-upon manner based on the resolutions of the United Nations and Arab League" mean a "right of return" for all Palestinians? If it does, then we have a non-starter here. And is the "PLO platform" the same as their charter document, perhaps as "revised," if in truth it ever was amended?

Hanan Ashrawi used to be real hot, about 35 years ago.

Brave people. If we can assure ourselves they're really on our side, we ought to do something real to support and/or protect them.

But I don't know how to do the first (time may tell) or the second.

resolving the refugee problem in an agreed-upon manner based on the resolutions of the United Nations and Arab League

i.e. the destruction of Israel based on "the right of return"

I suppose that is more liberal than out right warfare. However, is warfare ruled out?

And 1967 borders? Not going to happen.

I do agree that this is a start. If it actually gets started.
