Could Gonzales Be Going?

U.S. News suggests Attorney General Alberto Gonzales may resign and be replaced by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Sounds like a good idea to me (if a little late).

Because what DHS really needs is a little more upheaval.

Is there anything in Chertoff's record at DHS that could make you think that this is an improvement? Aside from the sheer unlikelyhood of finding anyone else as bad as Gonzo, that is. I'm beginning to suspect that Bush has some sort of perverse talent for picking incompetents that could overcome those odds...

I don't think that's right. Chertoff wouldn't be the choice, because the confirmation battle would be lined against Gonzales.

Unless Bush just appoints Chertoff as a recess appointment, I guess.

Chertoff hasn't exactly exemplified leadership or competence -- FEMA; gut-driven threat levels -- but I think he is regarded as relatively non-partisan and thus would be a relatively conciliatory choice as AGAG's successor.

I thought Colbert settled this thing in '05 - the administration is not sinking, it's soaring. They are rearranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg.

Well, the left wing smear machine appears to be close to taking down this principled man.

Nobody is saying that Chertoff is a partisan hack. In fact, very few people are even saying he is outright incompetent. And I am sure that the Justice Department was always going to be a better home for Chertoff (giving his legal background) than the DHS. But you have to expect a bruising confirmation battle given the high-profile messes that DHS has been through. Unless there are no other candidates, why would Bush want to put his administration and Chertoff through a media circus?

I'm wondering whether this will mean a vacancy in Homeland Security, or whether Bush is proposing that the same person head HS and Justice. The latter would be really, really bad.
