Phillies Win World Series:

The Philadelphia Phillies have won the World Series for the first time since 1980, and only the second time in the team's 125 year history. A very impressive performance! Congratulations to all the Phillies Phans in my temporary home city during my semester at Penn. Hopefully, this win will ease the Phans' anguish over the fact that the city had not had a major sports championship since the 76ers won the NBA title in 1983.

I though a Cubs World Series win was part of the change I could belive in. I guess Obama'a a Sox fan, though. . .

Last time the Phils won, Reagan beat Carter. Change we can believe in.

Let's hope that BO suffers the same fate on 11/4 as the White Sox and Cubs did this year. Just think Leon Durham...

This victory seems kind of anti-climatic here in Philadelphia. In 1980, there were people everywhere in the streets the minute the final out was called -- I didn't even know the Phillies had won last night until I changed channels and turned on the game 20 minutes after it was over.

I'm sure the 150 or so people who watched the game on T.V. enjoyed seeing the Phils end the suffering. Having been in class at the time my only question is what did the fans find to boo after the final pitch?

There are 13 cities where all 4 major sports are represented. Prior to this win, Philadelphia had been the city with the longest wait since a championship (24 years - nearly 100 seasons).

Now, it is technically Washington, D.C. (Jan. 1991 Superbowl), but they just got a baseball team a few years ago, so it really doesn't count.

Really, it's Minneapolis, which has hosted a bunch of losers since World Series in Oct. of 1991. In fact, we haven't even had a team in the finals since 1991. Instead, 3 of our 4 teams (Twins, Wild, Timberwolves) lost in the semi-finals to a southern California team (Angels, Ducks, Lakers) all within about a year of each other.

Loserville, U.S.A. (at least when it comes to sports).

paul, it must have looked like that since you were the only person in philadelphia not at either frankford and cottman or broad and walnut. every car i saw was honking its horn and every person screaming.

Prof. S., I don't think we should limit this to 4-sport cities. Cleveland, San Diego and Buffalo have all had it worse than the Twin Cities.

I think Cleveland is certainly the champion city of sports futility at this point. I'm sure if they had an NHL team, they would be terrible too.

It sounded like boos for Selig, Gillick, and the Rays.

Philly had not won since 1983 because the city broke the gentlemen's agreement not to buid any building higher than William Penn on top of City Hall. I was at Penn in 1983 and the change in the city skyline is amazing. The curse was finally broken in 2008 when William Penn was installed on top of Philly's highest building. Go Flyers! Go Eagles!

What about Boston, we've only had 2 championships in the last year, and no championships in 2002 AND 2006.
