In 1988, George Bush was running for President as a virtual incumbent against a liberal Massachusetts politician. At the time, I was listening to a lot of ska, particularly various bands that, at one time or another, recorded on the 2Tone label, including The Specials, the Untouchables, and the Beat (aka English Beat). One of the ska bands I particularly enjoyed was Madness. Their music was fun and upbeat, and often displayed a wild sense of humor. (Who else would name a song “Michael Caine“?) One of their biggest hits — never, to my knowledge, released on a studio album in the U.S. that wasn’t a compilation — was “It Must Be Love,” a fun little ditty and this week’s song lyric.
I never thought I’d miss you
Half as much as I do
And I never thought I’d feel this way
The way I feel
About you
As soon as I wake up
Every night, every day
I know that it’s you I need
To take the blues away
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
Nothing more, nothing less
Love is the best
How can it be that we can
Say so much without words?
Bless you and bless me
Bless the bees
And the birds
I’ve got to be near you
Every night, every day
I couldn’t be happy
Any other way
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
Nothing more, nothing less
Love is the best
As soon as I wake up
Every night, every day
I know that it’s you I need
To take the blues away
It must be love, love, love
It must be love, love, love
Nothing more, nothing less
Love is the best
It must be love, love, love…
