A couple of readers asked what I could possibly mean by saying that Supreme Court groupies pronounce the capital letter in “the Court.”
Of course, it’s a bit of a joke, since naturally you can’t literally pronounce the capital letter. I had thought it was a familiar joke, but I guess it’s not, so here’s a little explanation of what might be the truth behind the joke: Imagine people saying (1) “imagine the perspective of the creator” or (2) “imagine the perspective of the Creator.” The second person might say it a little differently, maybe with slightly different facial expressions or intonations — or, more figuratively still, the speaker and the listener might just have a common assumption that leads the listener to think of Creator rather than just creator. Hence the notion of figuratively pronouncing the capital letters.
