I’m going over an edited draft, and I see the word “nondeadly” was changed to … “undeadly.” Somehow I think the revised version would bring up mental images that the author did not intend.
(Seriously, if “nondeadly” is inapt, and it may well be, “nonlethal” is the better alternative.)
