House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas, said his panel would not consider it…. “Decriminalizing marijuana will only lead to millions more Americans becoming addicted to drugs and greater profits for drug cartels who fund violence along the U.S.-Mexico border. Allowing states to determine their own marijuana policy flies in the face of Supreme Court precedent.”
Two questions for chairman Smith: (1) How would repealing federal marijuana laws create greater profits for drug cartels, when the only reason these “drug cartels” exist is that they deal in illegal drugs that legitimate, non-violent businesses can’t sell? (2) Exactly what Supreme Court precedent requires the federal government to set a national marijuana policy?
