Jewel Kilcher and Garth Brooks singing the old Ian & Sylvia standard, Someday Soon – you remember, “Just out of the service, and he’s looking for his fun, Someday soon, going with him, someday soon.” I thought about this song after chatting with a National Guardsman in Reno airport a week ago, home to see his family and his girlfriend. The video’s not a great production, sound synch a little off, and truth is Garth Brooks does not add much to this quintessentially girl’s song. But it’s a little more flirty and sultry than Judy Collins’ earnestly-asexual-folkie-60s version (though we have to say the sidemen from that version, particularly the pedal steel and piano, hold up well even by today’s standards). Especially hard to imagine any of the 60s folksingers giving Jewel’s frankly disbelieving little-girl pout on the last “He loves his damned old rodeo, as much as he loves me.” And this version is from a performance aboard the USS Enterprise some years ago. Thanks to the folks who serve, and honor to the fallen. Happy Memorial Day.
(Apologies for the exceptionally light blogging the past while – a number of pressing family things. But I look forward to getting back to things here.)
