National Public Radio has a good story on the legal rules that regulate government surveillance of cell-site information, the location information sent by cell phones to allow providers to connect cell phone calls. I make a very brief appearance at the 2:45 mark. I’ve been meaning to blog about this issue, but it presents some pretty complicated legal questions; that translates into a time-consuming post to write. The short version is that I think a warrant is required under the statutory surveillance laws, even though I don’t think a warrant is needed under the Fourth Amendment. More soon, I hope.
