Alexander "Sasha" Volokh
Places

Places I've been, places I'm from, places I'm at

  • The Volokh family Soviet emigration Silver Anniversary tour, summary 2000. My family left the Soviet Union and landed in Vienna on June 13, 1975. (I was a year and 8 months old.) On June 13, 2000, I landed in Vienna, this time fortunately from the other direction. Back in 1975, we spent a week or two in Vienna and three to four months in Rome; I spent a week in each place this time around. Warning: Do not attempt unless you have a fast connection! Note also -- this site is incomplete, and most of the captions are missing.
  • My tour of the Middle Ages, part II: England, spring 2000. Warning: Do not attempt unless you have a fast connection! Note also -- this site is incomplete, and most of the captions are missing.

  • Boston, where I lived (actually, in Cambridge, from 1998 to 2004. Here's a picture of my father's and my haircut ritual at Andre's Hair Salon on Mass. Ave. Also, my shower under construction.
  • Ukraine, where I was born. Check out the (Soviet-era) map of Kiev (that's Kyiv to you Ukrainians) on this site. The corner of Lenina vulytsya and Pushkins'ka vulytsya was the first place I lived. Next we moved to Ploshcha L'va Tolstoho, near the corner of Chervonoarmiys'ka vulytsya (that's Red Army St. in Ukrainian) and L'va Tolstoho vulytsya. A bit west of that, at the west side of Shevchenka Park, is Shevchenka University (Kiev Government University), where my father went to school. My mother studied on the north side of the park, in the philology department (not shown on the map). My father's family lives near the corner of Artema vulytsya and Turhenyevs'ka vulytsya.
